Bowen Family Therapy - Knowing Your Roots

Published: Monday, May 19, 2008 05:04 pm

ASSUMPTIONS:

• The past is currently influencing the present
• Change can happen—individuals can move along in the process of differentiation
• Differentiation: ability to maintain self in the face of high anxiety (remain autonomous in a highly emotional situation)
• Differentiation is internal and relational—they are isomorphic
• Anxiety is the driving force inhibiting change (it needs to be reduced to facilitate change)
• High intimacy and high autonomy with a balance is ideal
• Emotions are a physiological process—there is a difference between emotions and feelings; feelings are the thoughts that name and mediate emotions, give them meaning
• Symptoms are indicators of stress, anxiety
• Anyone can become symptomatic with enough stress; more differentiated people will be able to withstand more stress and, when they do become symptomatic, recover more quickly

Narrative Family Therapy - Knowing Your Story

Published: Monday, May 19, 2008 05:04 pm

• Personal experience is ambiguous
•Reality is shaped by language used to describe it
• Truth may not match historic truth, but it is true to the client
• Focus on effects of the problem, not the cause (how problem impacts family; how family affects problem)
• Stories organize our experience & shape our behavior
• The Problem is the problem; the person is not the problem
• People “are” the stories they tell
• The stories we tell ourselves are often based on messages received from society or our families
• People have their own unique filters by which they process messages from society

Spiritual Family Therapy - Knowing Your Identity

Published: Monday, May 19, 2008 05:04 pm

• Reason is not inherently a threat to faith. Reason can, in fact, be a tremendous help to faith.
• Careful thinking increases comprehension, and increased comprehension deepens religious commitment.
• All truth will be understood in relational frames. For example: Sin, salvation, sanctification, and justification.
• God is a Family and so is His Image
• We will marvel at God’s consistency in his own Person, and in his creation. We will see the forest, the divine tapestry that has been woven in to a complex unity.
• As this is achieved, we will find God working out his Shalom in our midst, knitting together our community into a family of God.
• Dispelling doubt is the most important contribution reason can make to spiritual formation.
